Get Ready With Me for a Run: Dermatology Mom Edition

At Dermatology Consultants, we believe healthy skin starts with everyday habits. Take a look at this “Get Ready With Me” routine from our own Dr. Lydia Turnbull, who shares how she protects her skin while staying active outdoors. As a dermatologist and mom, my mornings are all about efficiency, protection, and setting myself up for success, whether I’m heading into clinic or going for a run. Skincare doesn’t stop when you leave the bathroom mirror, it goes with you outdoors, especially when sun exposure, sweat, and movement are in the mix. Here’s how I get ready for a run while keeping my skin safe and comfortable.

Step 1: Sunscreen First

The most important step in any routine: sunscreen. I use EltaMD UV Sport Broad-Spectrum SPF 50+, a water-resistant sunscreen designed for active lifestyles. It stays put (even through sweat), won’t drip into my eyes, and protects against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. It’s also fragrance-free, paraben-free, and hypoallergenic, making it a safe, reliable choice for all skin types.Derm Tip: Apply generously to all exposed skin before you head out. Skimping on sunscreen is one of the biggest mistakes people make!

Step 2: Protect Against Chafing

Comfort is just as important as sun protection when you’re active. That’s why I apply Body Glide Anti-Chafe Stick under my arms and on my inner thighs. It creates a breathable barrier that prevents irritation from friction, moisture, and fabric. No greasiness, no residue, just long-lasting comfort so I can focus on my run, not my skin.

Step 3: Don’t Forget Your Lips

Lips need sun and moisture protection, too! My go-to is the classic Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. It conditions with beeswax, hydrates with Vitamin E, and gives a refreshing peppermint tingle. Bonus: it provides up to 12 hours of moisture, so my lips never feel dry, even after a long run.

Step 4: Top It Off with a Hat

I never leave for a run without a hat. It’s the simplest way to protect my scalp and face from harsh rays, while also keeping me cool and shaded.

Ready, Set, Run!

With just a few intentional steps, you can protect your skin and keep yourself comfortable while you’re active outdoors. Skincare doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be consistent.Want more info on dermatologist-approved products that keep you protected outside the office?
