When it comes to your skin’s health, it may seem like over-the-counter or DIY treatments are a good solution. If the problem is worrisome you may consider an appointment with your family doctor. But the truth is that no one knows skin like board-certified dermatologists. They have both the training and hands-on experience to diagnose and treat over 3000 skin conditions, some that may be stubborn and troubling, and some, like melanoma, that can be life-threatening. Although there are many reasons why your family needs to see a board-certified dermatologist for their skincare needs, here are our top five reasons to see a board-certified dermatologist.
1. Board-certified Dermatologists are THE skin cancer experts.
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S., affecting 1 in 5 people according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Early detection and treatment are essential to curing skin cancer before it becomes a bigger problem. At the same time, skin cancer and other skin conditions can be hard to spot, challenging to diagnose and even harder to treat. While many other health care providers offer some type of dermatologic care, physicians certified by the American Board of Dermatology have at least years of specialized training in skincare. They also have specialized tools for examining and monitoring your skin for signs of skin cancer. When detected early, the 5-year survival rate for skin cancer is 99%.
Unfortunately, many skin cancers can remain undetected by healthcare providers who do not have as much training or experience as a board-certified dermatologist.
2. Board-certified Dermatologists handle the toughest skin conditions.
Board-certified dermatologists are used to treating difficult skin problems including chronic conditions that are tricky to diagnose and treat without the right expertise and the right tools. Some of these conditions are cosmetic concerns, while others cause a serious impact on quality of life. From acne to rosacea, chronic dermatitis to eczema and psoriasis and beyond, Board-certified dermatologists know which products and therapies work best for each patient’s individual condition and needs.
3. Board-certified Dermatologists can spot emergencies.
Some skin conditions are actually signs of medical emergencies requiring immediate care, such as cellulitis or staph infections. Because of their extensive experience with skin, dermatologists are able to recognize these signs when other care providers may not. If treatment requires more systemic care they can swiftly refer patients to emergency medicine, or they may be able to treat some serious conditions with prescriptions.
4. Board-certified dermatologists know the best and fastest ways to deal with pesky skin pests.
Our skin is vulnerable to a number of infectious diseases including bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, and even parasites. Conditions like herpes, candida (yeast rash) and ringworm (common parasite) can all be diagnosed, managed or cured most effectively by board-certified dermatologists who are required to know the latest advances in skincare.
5. Board-certified Dermatologists have much more training in dermatology and skin cancer surgery.
Before becoming a board-certified Dermatologist, someone must first receive a bachelor’s degree and then attend medical school to receive an MD (Medical Degree) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). For an MD that’s four years in bachelor’s education, four years of medical school, and one year of internship. This is followed by a 3-year residency in an accredited dermatology program. Many dermatologists also pursue fellowships in specialty practices like Mohs surgery, highly effective treatment for skin cancers. Most NP’s and physician assistants may get a short rotation in dermatology, or a few months of training in a specific area.
Board-certified dermatologists receive a minimum of 12 years of dermatologic training.
After all the educational and experience requirements are fulfilled, a dermatologist must pass an exam administered by the American Board of Dermatology. The physician must pass this exam every 10 years to retain their board certification to help them remain up to date on the latest dermatologic advances. We have annual CME hour requirements as well.
The American Board of Dermatology is 1 of 24 medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Through this board, the American Board of Dermatology works to certify dermatologists and provides common standards for physicians to achieve and maintain board certifications.
