SKin Cancer Treatment

Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the skin.  It usually occurs in areas that are exposed to the sun, but they can occur anywhere on the surface of the skin.  The incidence of skin cancer has been rising steadily over the past several years. The good news is that skin cancer diagnosis and skin cancer treatment have become more advanced.

There are many types of skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are the most common types, and are also referred to as non-melanoma skin cancer.  These cancers often present as a pink patch or bump that will not heal.  If left unchecked, they can spread and become more difficult to treat.

Melanoma is a more serious form of skin cancer that can spread from the skin to other tissues and organs. Fortunately, it is not as common as non-melanoma skin cancer.

Known risk factors for developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers include the following:

  • A fair or light complexion
  • A family history of melanoma
  • Older age (nonmelanoma skin cancers are more common in those over 40)
  • Sun exposure and sunburns, including tanning beds
  • A weakened immune system

Skin cancer can develop in anyone, not only people with these risk factors. Young, healthy people—even those with dark skin, hair, and eyes—can develop skin cancer.
